Bradenton, FL. October 7, 2009 – A new human clinical trial involving 82 patients with dyslipidemia, showed a significant reduction in total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, blood glucose, and significantly increased HDL cholesterol.
Bergamot is the common name for Risso bergamia citrus, which grows only in the coastal region of the Ionian Sea in the region of Calabria, southern Italy. Bergamot essential oil is widely used in the cosmetics industry and perfumery. Citrus bergamot contains high levels of naringin, neoeriocitrin and neohesperidin.
This news comes just after the investigation recently published in the Journal of Natural Products, July 2009, which showed rare bergamot fruit contains high molecular weight flavonoids carrying 3-hydroxy-3-acid methylglutaric (HMG) halves. Prof. G. Sindona University of Calabria had identified four flavonoids capable of interfering with the natural synthesis of cholesterol in human body by inhibiting the activity of the first enzyme in the pathway of cholesterol synthesis: HMG-CoA reductase (3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase).
The new clinical trial in humans involving 82 patients with dyslipidemia, all with total cholesterol and triglycerides over 250. These patients received one or two capsules of 500 mg of Citrus Bergamot polyphenolic extract of 30 days. At the end of 30 days, the investigation showed a 31.44% average reduction in total cholesterol, increased 42,82% in HDL cholesterol, 38.84% reduction in LDL cholesterol, 41.54% reduction in triglycerides, and 21,93% increase in the level of glucose in the blood.
Principal Investigator, Vincenzo Mollace, PhD, MD, professor of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University "Magna Grecia", in Catanzaro, Italy is encouraged by the result. "In just four weeks, we have seen a significant reduction in total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides between patients with dyslipidemia, who had levels high cholesterol and high risk of CVD. We are also seeing significant increases in HDL, the good cholesterol and the reduction of glucose in the blood as well. " Mollace says.

A Theory of Universals: Volume 2: Universals and Scientific Realism $35.07 This is a study, in two volumes, of one of the longest-standing philosophical problems: the problem of universals. In volume I David Armstrong surveys and criticizes the main approaches and solutions to the problems that have been canvassed, rejecting the various forms of nominalism and ‘Platonic’ realism. In volume II he develops an important theory of his own, an objective theory of universals based not on linguistic conventions, but on the actual and potential findings of natural science. He thus reconciles a realism about qualities and relations with an empiricist epistemology. The theory allows, too, for a convincing explanation of natural laws as relations between these universals. |

Duns Scotus and the Problem of Universals $44.17 John Duns Scotus (d.1308), known as the subtle doctor among medieval schoolmen, produced a formidable philosophical theology using and adapting an Aristotelian metaphysical framework. Critical of Thomas Aquinas grand Summas, Scotus died before producing a final synthesis of his own. Indeed, his work, left in disarray for centuries, has only recently become available in an edited format. Contemporary metaphysics, taking up the problem of universals, treads on ground already well-worked by Scotus. Duns Scotus and the Problem of Universals shows how Scotus treatment of the problem of universals is both coherent and, even by contemporary standards, cogent. Todd Bates recovers and sets out Scotus understanding of the structure of material substance, reconstructs Scotus arguments for universals and haecceities, and shows how Scotus theory applies to the metaphysics of the Incarnation. This book makes an important contribution to a neglected but crucial area of Scotus scholarship. |

Language Universals Linguistic Typology $57.5 Since its first publication, Language Universals and Linguistic Typology has become established as the leading introductory account of one of the most productive areas of linguistics—the analysis, comparison, and classification of the common features and forms of the organization of languages. Adopting an approach to the subject pioneered by Greenberg and others, Bernard Comrie is particularly concerned with syntactico-semantic universals, devoting chapters to word order, case making, relative clauses, and causative constructions. His book is informed throughout by the conviction that an exemplary account of universal properties of human language cannot restrict itself to purely formal aspects, nor focus on analysis of a single language. Rather, it must also consider language use, relate formal properties to testable claims about cognition and cognitive development, and treat data from a wide range of languages. This second edition has been revised and updated to take full account of new research in universals and typology in the past decade, and more generally to consider how the approach advocated here relates to recent advances in generative grammatical theory. |

Cultural Universals and Particulars $40.83 "Wiredu’s discussion of culturally defined values and concepts, as well as his attention to such timely issues as human rights, makes this book invaluable interdisciplinary reading." –D. A. Masolo Ghanaian philosopher Kwasi Wiredu confronts the paradox that while Western cultures recoil from claims of universality, previously colonized peoples, seeking to redefine their identities, insist on cultural particularities. Wiredu asserts that universals, rightly conceived on the basis of our common biological identity, are not incompatible with cultural particularities and, in fact, are what make intercultural communication possible. Drawing on aspects of Akan thought that appear to diverge from Western conceptions in the areas of ethics and metaphysics, Wiredu calls for a just reappraisal of these disparities, free of thought patterns corrupted by a colonial mentality. Wiredu’s exposition of the principles of African traditional philosophy is not purely theoretical; he shows how certain aspects of African political thought may be applied to the practical resolution of some of Africa’s most pressing problems. |

The Book of Absolutes: A Critique of Relativism and a Defence of Universals $25.95 Gairdner refutes the popular belief in cultural relativism by showing that there are hundreds of well-established cross-cultural "human universals." He then discusses the many universals found in physics – as well as Einstein’s personal regret at how his work was misinterpreted by the public’s eagerness to promote relativism. Gairdner also gives a lively account of the many universals of human biology, including the controversial topic of universal gender differences or "brain sex." He then looks at universal concepts of both natural and international law, and ends by discussing language theory. He shows how philosophers from Nietzsche to Derrida have misused linguistic concepts to justify their relativism, even though a sustained and successful effort by serious scientists and philosophers of language has revealed myriad universals of human language, ranging from language acquisition, to word-order, to "Universal Grammar." From ethics to Einstein, culture to biology, law to language, The Book of Absolutes makes complex topics accessible to a broad audience and demonstrates that there are plenty of certainties, even in our postmodern world. |

Sign Language and Linguistic Universals $39.92 Sign languages are of great interest to linguists because, while they are produced by the same brain, their physical transmission differs greatly from that of spoken languages. Wendy Sandler and Diane Lillo-Martin compare spoken languages with those that are signed, in order to seek universal properties of human languages. No prior background in sign language linguistics is assumed, and numerous pictures are provided to make descriptions accessible to readers. |

Substances and Universals in Aristotle’s Metaphysics $38.38 In this book, Theodore Scaltsas brings the insights of contemporary philosophy to bear on a classic problem in metaphysics that stems from Aristotle’s theory of substance. Scaltsas provides an analysis of the enigmatic notions of potentiality and actuality, which he uses to explain Aristotle’s substantial holism by showing how the concrete and the abstract parts of a substance form a dynamic, diachronic whole. |

Variation and Universals in Biolinguistics $149.01 Jenkins has succeeded in putting together a terrific volume. Some of the most creative minds in the fields tackle questions of utmost importance in biolinguistics. The clarity with which these essays are written and the insights expressed in them are sure to provide solid foundations for research in linguistics and related fields for years to come. A truly outstanding collection Cedric Boeckx, Harvard University, USA This book provides a current and interdisciplinary overview of work on the biology of language – what is sometimes called the "biolinguistic approach." A wide range of areas are investigated and reviewed by specialists: the micro-parametric theory of syntax, models of language acquisition and historical change, dynamical systems in language, genetics of populations, pragmatics of discourse, language neurology, genetic disorders of language, sign language, and evolution of language. It focuses on the interplay between variation and the universal properties of language. Detailed surveys or case studies are provided from the areas of syntactic variation, genetic variation, neurological variation and historical variation, among others, and of the universal principles and theoretical models that underlie the variation. Finally, it considers – in addition to the detailed empirical studies – philosophical, foundational and methodological issues in the study of the biology of language and its place within the natural sciences; e.g., innateness, modularity, language design and unification in biolinguistics, as well as critiques of the approach. |

Politeness: Some Universals in Language Usage $46.3 This study is about the principles for constructing polite speeches. The core of it first appeared in Questions and Politeness, edited by Esther N. Goody (now out of print). It is here reissued with a fresh introduction that surveys the considerable literature in linguistics, psychology and the social sciences that the original extended essay stimulated, and suggests distinct directions for research. The authors describe and account for some remarkable parallelisms in the linguistic construction of utterances with which people express themselves in different languages and cultures. A motive for these parallels is isolated – politeness, broadly defined to include both polite friendliness and polite formality – and a universal model is constructed outlining the abstract principles underlying polite usages. This is based on the detailed study of three unrelated languages and cultures: the Tamil of South India, the Tzeltal spoken by Mayan Indians in Chiapas, Mexico, and the English of the USA and England, supplemented by examples from other cultures. Underneath the apparent diversity of polite behaviour in different societies lie some general pan-human principles of social interaction, and the model of politeness provides a tool for analysing the quality of social relations in any society. This volume will be of special interest to students in linguistic pragmatics, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, anthropology, and the sociology and social psychology of interaction. |

Mind the Gap: Tracing the Origins of Human Universals $102.57 What makes us human? What made us become the way we are? One way to answer these questions is to identify the traits that all humans share, traits that are universal features of all human societies. Another way to do so is to ask how humans differ from other species, particularly from our closest relatives, the nonhuman primates. The contributors to this book pursue both approaches, in an effort to understand how evolution has shaped modern human behavior and societies. |

Emotions Across Languages and Cultures: Diversity and Universals $53.41 In this ground-breaking book, Anna Wierzbicka brings psychological, anthropological and lingusitic insights to bear on our understanding of the way emotions are expressed and experienced in different cultures, languages, and social relations. The expression of emotion in the face, body and modes of speech are all explored and Wierzbicka shows how the bodily expression of emotion varies across cultures and challenges traditional approaches to the study of facial expressions. This book will be invaluable to academics and students of emotion across the social sciences. |

Social Psychology: Exploring Universals Across Cultures $3.94 The first introductory textbook to present mainstream coverage of social psychology through a cross-cultural perspective. Moghaddam is the first social psychology text that looks beyond the borders of Western societies to explore social behaviors around the world, allowing readers to examine and understand similiarities and differences in them. By exploring behaviors, the author also illustrates how research can lead us to explore the "universals" in social behavior using humankind as a database. By including cross-cultural research and challenging readers to explore and evaluate its findings. Moghaddam offers a richer, more complete picture of social psychology. |

The Mind and Its Stories: Narrative Universals and Human Emotion $45.17 Patrick Colm Hogan argues that, to a remarkable degree, the stories people admire in different cultures follow a limited number of patterns determined by cross-culturally constant ideas about emotion. Hogan draws on world literature; experimental research treating emotion and emotion concepts; and methodological principles from contemporary linguistics and philosophy of science. He concludes with a discussion of the relationship between the narrative, emotion concepts, and the biological and social components of emotion. |

Plato’s Camera: How the Physical Brain Captures a Landscape of Abstract Universals $30.76 In "Plato’s Camera," eminent philosopher Paul Churchland offers a novel account of how the brain constructs a representation–or ‘takes a picture’–of the universe’s timeless categorical and dynamical structure. This construction process, which begins at birth, yields the enduring background conceptual framework with which we will interpret our sensory experience for the rest of our lives. But, as even Plato knew, to make singular perceptual judgments requires that we possess an "antecedent" framework of abstract categories to which any perceived particular can be relevantly assimilated. How that background framework is assembled in the first place is the motivating mystery, and the primary target, of Churchland’s book. His account draws on the best of the recent philosophical literature on semantic theory, and on the most recent results from cognitive neurobiology. The resulting story throws immediate light on issues that have been at the center of philosophy for at least two millennia, such as how the mind represents reality, both in its ephemeral and in its timeless dimensions. Unexpectedly, this neurobiologically grounded account of human cognition also provides a systematic story of how such low-level epistemological activities are integrated within an enveloping framework of linguistic structures and regulatory mechanisms at the social level. As Churchland illustrates, this integration of cognitive mechanisms at several levels has launched the human race on an epistemological adventure denied to all other terrestrial creatures. |

Chemical Vapor Deposition: Precursors, Processes and Applications $304.94 The book is one of the most comprehensive overviews ever written on the key aspects of chemical vapour deposition processes and it is more comprehensive, technically detailed and up-to-date than other books on CVD. The contributing authors are all practising CVD technologists and are leading international experts in the field of CVD. It presents a logical and progressive overview of the various aspects of CVD processes. Basic concepts, such as the various types of CVD processes, the design of CVD reactors, reaction modelling and CVD precursor chemistry are covered in the first few chapters. Then follows a detailed description of the use of a variety CVD techniques to deposit a wide range of materials, including semiconductors, metals, metal oxides and nitrides, protective coatings and functional coatings on glass. Finally and uniquely, for a technical volume, industrial and commercial aspects of CVD are also discussed together with possible future trends, which is an unusual, but very important aspect of the book. |

The Physical Basis of Predication $46.65 This is a book about some of the basic concepts of metaphysics: universals, particulars, causality, and possibility. Its aim is to give an account of the real constituents of the world. The author defends a realistic view of universals, characterizing the notion of universal by considering language and logic, possibility, hierarchies of universals, and causation. On the other hand, he argues that logic and language are not reliable guides to the nature of reality. All assertions and predications about the natural world are ultimately founded on "basic universals," which are the fundamental type of universal and central to causation. A distinction is drawn between unified particulars (which have a natural principle of unity) and arbitrary particulars (which lack such a principle); unified particulars are the terms of causal relations and thus real constituents of the world. Arbitrary particulars such as events, states of affairs, and sets have no ontological significance. |

Chemical Vapor Deposition $52.23 The deposition of thin films on to a solid substrate has become an important materials processing technique and is of interest in many applications such as those involved with the fabrication of micro-electronic circuits, optical and magnetic devices, etc. Thin films are generally deposited by the process of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).This work is directed at the simulation and optimization of the CVD process in a vertical impinging CVD reactor for material fabrication, focusing on the rate of deposition and on the uniformity of the thin film obtained. This work considers the deposition of Silicon from Silane. Numerical simulations are used to determine the effect of important design variables on the deposition rate and film characteristics. Then Response surfaces are created using the Compromise Response Surface Method (CRSM) to approximate the responses for the range of design variables considered. Then stochastic optimization is performed using the Mean Value Method (MVM) on the resulting response surfaces to find the optimal values of the design variables for various levels of uncertainty. |

The Metaphysics Within Physics $40.53 What fundamental account of the world is implicit in physical theory? Physics straightforwardly postulates quarks and electrons, but what of the more intangible elements, such as laws of nature, universals, causation and the direction of time? Do they have a place in the physical structure of the world? Tim Maudlin argues that the ontology derived from physics takes a form quite different from those most commonly defended by philosophers. Physics postulates irreducible fundamental laws, eschews universals, does not require a fundamental notion of causation, and makes room for the passage of time. In a series of linked essays The Metaphysics Within Physics outlines an approach to metaphysics opposed to the Humean reductionism that motivates much analytical metaphysics. |

The Four-Category Ontology: A Metaphysical Foundation for Natural Science $43.01 E. J. Lowe sets out and defends his theory of what there is. His four-category ontology is a metaphysical system that recognizes two fundamental categorial distinctions which cut across each other to generate four fundamental ontological categories. The distinctions are between the particular and the universal and between the substantial and the non-substantial. The four categories thus generated are substantial particulars, non-substantial particulars, substantial universals and non-substantial universals. Non-substantial universals include properties and relations, conceived as universals. Non-substantial particulars include property-instances and relation-instances, otherwise known as non-relational and relational tropes or modes. Substantial particulars include propertied individuals, the paradigm examples of which are persisting, concrete objects. Substantial universals are otherwise known as substantial kinds and include as paradigm examples natural kinds of persisting objects. This ontology has a lengthy pedigree, many commentators attributing it to Aristotle on the basis of certain passages in his apparently early work, the Categories. At various times during the history of Western philosophy, it has been revived or rediscovered, but it has never found universal favour, perhaps on account of its apparent lack of parsimony as well as its commitment to universals. In pursuit of ontological economy, metaphysicians have generally preferred to recognize fewer than four fundamental ontological categories. However, Occam’s razor stipulates only that we should not multiply entities beyond necessity; Lowe argues that the four-category ontology has an explanatory power unrivalled by more parsimonious systems, and that this counts decisively in its favour. He shows that it provides a powerful explanatory framework for a unified account of causation, dispositions, natural laws, natural necessity and many other related matters, such as the semantics of counterfactual conditionals and the character of the truthmaking relation. As such, it constitutes a thoroughgoing metaphysical foundation for natural science. |

Applying Anthropology to the Situation of the Roma $21.15 What are the practices and discourses involved in a project that aims to develop the knowledge and skills of networks of young Roma in seven countries in Central and Eastern Europe to enable them to influence public opinion and practice? How are differences and universals between social groups and persons perceived and addressed? And what does it mean for the anthropologist to participate in an area where culture, difference and universals are already discursive currencies? This book is based on ethnographic fieldwork and writing for a M.Phil. Thesis in Social Anthropological Analysis, which has been revised and complemented with earlier and later writings in autumn 2004. After looking at how "the Roma," and "the situation of the Roma in Central and Eastern Europe," are currently generated, the book focuses onone exemplary project initiated and carried out by a minority rights NGO. The description and analysis of this project afford a perspective on the permutations of universals that contemporary Europeans grasp in two categories: (1) universal human rights and (2) bureaucratic practices such as organisational management, generatingstandardised data and objective procedures. The ethnography leads to reflections on cooperation, culture, networks and systems, and applied anthropology. |

Aesthetic as Science of Expression and General Linguistic $33.32 Historical intellectualism has been the cause of the many researches which have been made, especially during the last two centuries, researches which continue to-day, for a philosophy of history, for an ideal history, for a sociology, for a historical psychology, or however may be otherwise entitled or described a science whose object is to extract from history, universal laws and concepts. Social Studies Excursions, K-3: Book One: Powerful Units on Food, Clothing, and Shelter $10.76 Review how these units align with the National Council for Social Studies Curriculum Standards. The problem with most social studies textbooks is that they lack the content K3 students need to develop basic social understandingsdespite the fact that this is one of the goals of most state and district curriculum guides. With "Social Studies Excursions, K3," Janet Alleman and Jere Brophy offer a better alternative. They provide units structured around powerful ideas, developed in depth with applications to outisde life, creating a far more substantive program than any major textbook can support. This is the first in a three-volume series in which the authors present instructional units on cultural universals for the primary grades. In this, the first volume, the focus is on food, clothing, and shelter. Although similar units are found in other textbooks, Alleman and Brophy’s are more powerful. They focus on content that is elementary and familiar in that it addresses fundamental aspects of the human condition and connects with experience-based tacit knowledge that students already possess. But in addition to reaffirming what students already know, they help students construct knowledge about the cultural universals that they may be unfamiliar with. Students will also discover a great deal of new information, develop connections to help them transform scattered items of knowledge into a network of integrated knowledge, and apply this knowledge to their lives outside of school. |

Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology: Expanded Second Edition $19.3 Today man’s mind is under attack by all the leading schools of philosophy. We are told that we cannot trust our senses, that logic is arbitrary, that concepts have no basis in reality. Ayn Rand opposes that torrent of nihilism, and she provides the alternative in this eloquent presentation of the essential nature–and power–of man’s conceptual faculty. She offers a startlingly original solution to the problem that brought about the collapse of modern philosophy: the problem of universals. This brilliantly argued, superbly written work, together with an essay by philosophy professor Leonard Peikoff, is vital reading for all those who seek to discover that human beings can and should live by the guidance of reason. |

Moral Relativism: A Dialogue $6.21 One in the series New Dialogues in Philosophy, edited by Dale Jacquette, J. Kellenberger brings together a group of hypothetical individuals from different backgrounds with real philosophical views to discuss their ideas on morality and moral relativism. What emerges from their numerous discussions are contrasting views on whether morality is objective, how moral universals differ from moral absolutes, the implications of ethnocentrism on moral judgment, the place of choice in moral decision making, and the importance and reality of moral dilemmas. The dialogues examine arguments for and against adopting a relativist stance on morality through the invented dialogues to help students resolve moral problems. |

Metaphysics: Third Edition $41.45 This essential core text introduces readers to metaphysics. In thoughtful and engaging prose, Peter van Inwagen examines three profound questions; What are the most general features of the world? Why is there a world? And, what is the place of human beings in the world? The third edition includes an entirely new chapter on ontology. The new chapter presents a theory of the nature of being and proceeds to apply this theory to two problems of ontology; the problem of non-existent objects and the problem of universals. Equally valuable as a textbook in a university course or an introduction to metaphysical thinking for the interested layperson, Metaphysics remains a fascinating book for a wide range of readers, from first-time students to the most sophisticated philosophers. |

Two Concepts of Allegory: A Study of Shakespeare’s the Tempest and the Logic of Allegorical Expression $23.99 The fundamental subject of A. D. Nuttall’s bold and daring first book, " Two Concepts of Allegory," is a particular habit of thought–the practice of thinking about universals as though they were concrete things. His study takes the form of an inquiry into certain conceptual questions raised, in the first place, by the allegorical critics of "The Tempest," and, in the second place, by allegorical and quasi-allegorical poetry in general. The argument has the further consequence of suggesting that allegory and metaphysics are in practice more closely allied than is commonly supposed. This paperback reissue includes a new preface by the author. |

Other People’s Rejection Letters: Relationship Enders, Career Killers, and 150 Other Letters You’ll Be Glad You Didn’t Receive $20.51 Welcome to the rejection-letter hall of fame, where the hopes and dreams of celebrities (Jimi Hendrix, Andy Warhol, among others) are crushed alongside the aspirations of the rest of us. You’ll find handwritten notes from former lovers, nasty e-mails from would-be bosses, heated texts, crayon scrawlings, and surprising dismissals from Playboy, Disney, even the pope. To unearth this collection, Bill Shapiro searched America’s desk drawers, hard drives, and government files. But what at first seems to be a voyeuristic jaunt through other people’s flops is ultimately a testimony to everyone who has at least tried. And while rejection’s sting is painful, it is not lethal; here, you’ll see that one of the great universals is not only people’s desire for acceptance but also their ability to persevere. BILL SHAPIRO is the editor in chief of LIFE.com and the former editor of LIFE magazine. He lives in Brooklyn, New York. |

Self to Soul: A Vision of Psychology and Spirituality $14.2 SELF TO SOUL: A Vision of Psychology and Spirituality, by Judy Marshall, Ph.D., puts spiritual knowledge – from traditional religious theory to the esoterica of the New Age – in perspective for the serious and mainstream reader. Building on the work of Aldous Huxley and Joseph Campbell, it compares psychological and philosophical universals and describes a system of spiritual "reality" and our psychological place within it. This is a rational and intelligent discussion of universal spiritual wisdom and how the soul and "spirituality" can work in our lives. SELF TO SOUL is also an honest look at what universal spiritual principles say about psychology. It endorses an entirely spiritually-based view of psychological experience as the key to transformation on both the individual and collective levels. The reader is taken on a journey from the pursuit of self (so basic in our culture and popular psychology) to the collective, always interactive experience of soul, in which the individual is served best by serving God and the greater spiritual order and maintaining an attitude of compassion towards others. |

Philosophical Papers $39 Frank Ramsey was the greatest of the remarkable generation of Cambridge philosophers and logicians which included G. E. Moore, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Maynard Keynes. Before his tragically early death in 1930 at the age of twenty-six, he had done seminal work in mathematics and economics as well as in logic and philosophy. This volume, with a new and extensive introduction by D. H. Mellor, contains all Ramsey’s previously published writings on philosophy and the foundations of mathematics. The latter gives the definitive form and defence of the reduction of mathematics to logic undertaken in Russell and Whitehead’s Principia Mathematica; the former includes the most profound and original studies of universals, truth, meaning, probability, knowledge, law and causation, all of which are still constantly referred to, and still essential reading for all serious students of these subjects. |

The Papuan Languages of New Guinea $60.16 This introduction to the descriptive and historical linguistics of the Papuan languages of New Guinea provide an accessible account of one of the richest and most diverse linguistic situations in the world. The Papuan languages number over 700 (or 20 per cent of the world’s total) in more than sixty language families. Less than a quarter of the individual languages have yet been adequately documented, and in this sense William Foley’s book might be considered premature. However, in the search for language universals and generalisations in linguistic typology, it would be foolhardy to neglect the information that is available. In this respect alone, the present volume, systematically organised on mainly typology principles, is particularly timely and useful. In addition, the processes of linguistic diffusion are present in New Guinea to an extent probably paralleled elsewhere on the globe. The Papuan Languages of New Guinea will be of interest not only to general and comparative linguists and to typologists, but also to sociolinguists and anthropologists for the information it provides on the social dynamics of language content. |

Twentieth-Century Multiplicity: American Thought and Culture, 1900 1920 $35.29 Twentieth-Century Multiplicity explores the effect of the culture-wide sense that prevailing syntheses failed to account fully for the complexities of modern life. As Daniel Borus documents the belief that there were many truths, many beauties, and many values — a condition that the historian Henry Adams labeled multiplicity – rather than singular ones prompted new departures in a myriad of discourses and practices ranging from comic strips to politics to sociology. The new emphasis on contingency and context prompted Americans to rethink what counted as truth and beauty, how the self was constituted and societies cohered and functioned. The challenge to absolutes and universals, Borus shows, gave rise to a culture in which standards were not always firm and fixed and previously accepted hierarchies were not always valid. Although itself strenuously challenged, especially during the First World War, early twentieth-century multiplicity bequeathed to American cultural life an abiding sense of the complexity and diversity of things. |

Universalism and Religions; Quaker Universalist Reader Number 2 $17.23 Universalism and Religions: Quaker Universalist Reader Number 2 Publisher: Quaker Universalist Fellowship Thirty-six Quaker Universalist authors from Great Britain and the U.S. write about "Universalism and Religions." This is the second of a three part collection which includes "Quaker Universalism" and our forthcoming "Universalism and Spirituality." The first chapter, What Is Universalism? is about the concept of universalism – is it about universal salvation, a universal Light, or what? The second, What Is Universal? is about the quest for human universals: do we have a common spirituality, say, or a common set of morals, or common basis of religion? The last three chapters look at universalism and religion, specifically Quakerism, a more orthodox Christianity, and finally non-Christian religions. $16.95 Available from your bookstore or from www.universalistfriends.org |

Understanding Cultures Through Their Key Words: English, Russian, Polish, German, and Japanese $52.09 This book develops the dual themes that languages can differ widely in their vocabularies, and are also sensitive indices to the cultures to which they belong. Wierzbicka seeks to demonstrate that every language has "key concepts," expressed in "key words," which reflect the core values of a given culture. She shows that cultures can be revealingly studied, compared, and explained to outsiders through their key concepts, and that the analytical framework necessary for this purpose is provided by the "natural semantic metalanguage," based on lexical universals, that the author and colleagues have developed on the basis of wide-ranging cross-linguistic investigations. Appealing to anthropologists, psychologists, and philosophers as well as linguists, this book demonstrates that cultural patterns can be studied in a verifiable, rigorous, and non-speculative way, on the basis of empirical evidence and in a coherent theoretical framework. |

The Implied Spider: Politics and Theology in Myth $24.05 Wendy Doniger’s perennially-selling study is both modern in its engagement with a diverse range of religions and refreshingly classic in its transhistorical, cross-cultural approach. Doniger reinvigorates the comparative reading of religion through a responsible analysis of patterns and themes across context. Her work is a powerful antidote to the paralysis of postcolonial theory, which rightfully condemns the reduction of religious practice to simple universals. Tapping into a wealth of narrative traditions, from the instructive tales of Judaism and Christianity to the moral lessons of the "Bhagavad Gita," Doniger extracts political meaning from a variety of texts while respecting the original ideas of each. Her new preface confronts the difficulty of research in this area, addressing the controversy of choosing subjects and positioning one’s argument. The text itself is updated throughout. |

This unique collection of essays on shamanism in Central Asia and the Indian Americas provides sound and engaging scholarship that reflects the great diversity in this fascinating field. First published in 1994, Ancient Traditions has become a vital, frequently cited reference in the ongoing study of ancient religions. For readers interested in indigenous cultures and religions, this collection of essays clarifies much of the New Age speculation on universals in shamanism, offering solid research on specific ethnic and historical expressions. In Ancient Traditions, prominent scholars in ethnography, anthropology, and the study of world religions bring to bear their diverse perspectives on this singularly fascinating topic. |

Kingdom of Mankon. Aspects of History, Language, Culture, Flora and Fauna $49.22 This book is a descriptive and documentary analysis of the Mankon I-language and E-language mirrored through aspects of history, geography, flora and fauna. These aspects manifest in the taxonomic nomenclatures attributed to referents in society. Because these referents were hitherto transmitted orally from generation to generation, the author has painstakingly analysed and documented aspects of Mankon culture for posterity. The work focuses in particular on Mankon proverbs for insights into the structure and function of the language. As a vehicle of communication, language plays a primordial role in encoding and decoding ‘metalinguistic’ data. Through thorough scientific linguistic universals and principals, Chi Che has proposed orthography for Mankon pedagogy that is simple, tenable and practicable. This book is the answer to the international clarion call for societies to analyse and document their endangered indigenous cultures. Schools, linguists, sociolinguists, anthropologists, historians and others will find this book especially useful. |

The Morphosyntax of Reiteration in Creole and Non-creole Languages (Hardcover) $319.49 This is a new contribution to a theory of reiteration in natural languages, with a special focus on creoles. Reiteration is meant to denote any situation where the same form occurs (at least) twice within the boundaries of some linguistic domain. By including two case studies bearing on Hebrew and Breton alongside five chapters on creole languages (Surinam creole, Haitian, Mauritian, S o Tom and Pitchi), this volume brings counter-evidence to the claim that reiteration phenomena are particularly typical of creoles. And by exploring the syntax of reiteration alongside its morphology, the authors are led to challenge the `iconic` theory of `reduplication` proposed in several other studies of similar phenomena. This volume will be relevant for creole studies, but also for readers more generally interested in language universals and the architecture of grammars. |

Moon Over Manifest $4.99 Abilene Tucker feels abandoned. Her father has put her on a train, sending her off to live with an old friend for the summer while he works a railroad job. Armed only with a few possessions and her list of universals, Abilene jumps off the train in Manifest, Kansas, aiming to learn about the boy her father once was. Having heard stories about Manifest, Abilene is disappointed to find that it’s just a dried-up, worn-out old town. But her disappointment quickly turns to excitement when she discovers a hidden cigar box full of mementos, including some old letters that mention a spy known as the Rattler. These mysterious letters send Abilene and her new friends, Lettie and Ruthanne, on an honest-to-goodness spy hunt, even though they are warned to “Leave Well Enough Alone.” Abilene throws all caution aside when she heads down the mysterious Path to Perdition to pay a debt to the reclusive Miss Sadie, a diviner who only tells stories from the past. It seems that Manifest’s history is full of colorful and shadowy characters – and long-held secrets. The more Abilene hears, the more determined she is to learn just what role her father played in that history. |

Music and Memory: An Introduction $45.57 This far-ranging book shows how human memory influences the organization of music. The book is divided into two parts. The first part presents basic ideas about memory and perception from cognitive psychology and, to some extent, cognitive linguistics. Topics include auditory processing, perception, and recognition. The second part describes in detail how the concepts from the first part are exemplified in music. The presentation is based on three levels of musical experience: event fusion (the formation of single musical events from acoustical vibrations in the air, on a time scale too small to exhibit rhythm), melody and rhythm, and form. The focus in the latter is on the psychological conditions necessary for making large-scale–that is, formal–boundaries clear in music rather than on traditional musical forms. The book also discusses the idea that much of the language used to describe musical structures and processes is metaphorical. It encourages readers to consider the possibility that the process of musical composition can be "a metaphorical transformation of their own experience into sound." The book also touches on unresolved debates about psychological musical universals, information theory, and the operation of neurons. It requires no formal musical training and contains a glossary and an appendix of listening examples. |

The World History Workbook: The Modern World Since 1500 $19.44 This innovative and user-friendly two-volume workbook is designed to guide students and instructors through the ideas and methods of the growing field of world history. Useful as either a supplement or as a core text, this hands-on book provides all the elements necessary to conduct a full-fledged world history course, including narrative, projects, primary sources, and a glossary of terms. Using the guiding thematic argument that world history is the history of a single humanity, David Hertzel asks students to examine historical "universals" such as language and the unified heritage of languages, genealogy, myth, motifs and themes of literature, and archetypes. Rather than provide exhaustive coverage of each of these vast topics, the workbook provides judiciously selected historical examples as models from which instructors and students can open discussion suitable to the time and circumstance of the particular class. The projects guide students to recognize universals in their own lives and societies, allowing instructors and students to pursue historical themes in a critical and open environment. Despite the rigor of the comparative method and the extensive use of primary material, the workbook retains a simple but powerful theme and approach, making it accessible to students representing a wide range of educational and social backgrounds. |

The Trouble with Canada … Still!: A Citizen Speaks Out $23.89 “… an eloquent plea for liberty and independence by a … critic who combines singing prose with a gimlet eye.” — ROGER KIMBALL, editor, "The New Criterion" “… provocative and stimulating … indispensable to the national political debate under way.” — CONRAD BLACK “Gairdner sees bright and clear what Canada so greatly needs, and his mobilizing passion wonderfully animates an analytical precision that should be the reason for a national—binational—celebration.” — WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY, JR. (commenting on the original edition) Two decades ago "The Trouble with Canada" sparked a conservative renewal and inspired a generation. Now, in this completely revised update, William D. Gairdner rejoins the battle, showing that Canada suffered a disturbing regime change in the last quarter of the twentieth century and is now caught between two irreconcilable styles of government: top-down collectivism and bottom-up individualism. The result is a regime besotted with high taxation and big government, a welfare culture that rewards laziness, and a hug-a-thug mentality that betrays justice. William D. Gairdner is the best-selling author of "War Against the Family," "The Trouble with Democracy," "The Book of Absolutes: A Critique of Relativism and a Defence of Universals," and other books. |

Metrical Stress Theory: Principles and Case Studies $59.55 In this account of metrical stress theory, Bruce Hayes builds on the notion that stress constitutes linguistic rhythm–that stress patterns are rhythmically organized, and that formal structures proposed for rhythm can provide a suitable account of stress. Through an extensive typological survey of word stress rules that uncovers widespread asymmetries, he identifies a fundamental distinction between iambic and trochaic rhythm, called the "Iambic/Trochaic law," and argues that it has pervasive effects among the rules and structures responsible for stress. Hayes incorporates the iambic/trochaic opposition into a general theory of word stress assignment, intended to account for all languages in which stress is assigned on phonological as opposed to morphological principles. His theory addresses particularly problematic areas in metrical work, such as ternary stress and unusual weight distinctions, and he proposes new theoretical accounts of them. Attempting to take more seriously the claim of generative grammar to be an account of linguistic universals, Hayes proposes analyses for the stress patterns of over 150 languages. Hayes compares his own innovative views with alternatives from the literature, allowing students to gain an overview of the field. "Metrical Stress Theory" should interest all who seek to understand the role of stress in language. |

On Ideas: Aristotle’s Criticism of Plato’s Theory of Forms $33.5 The Peri ideon (On Ideas) is the only work in which Aristotle systematically sets out and criticizes arguments for the existence of Platonic forms. Gail Fine presents the first full-length treatment in English of this important but neglected work. She asks how, and how well, Aristotle understands Plato’s theory of forms, and why and with what justification he favors an alternative metaphysical scheme. She examines the significance of the Peri ideon for some central questions about Plato’s theory of forms–whether, for example, there are forms corresponding to every property or only to some, and if only to some, then to which ones; whether forms are universals, particulars or both; and whether they are meanings, properties or both. Fine also provides a general discussion of Plato’s theory of forms, and of our evidence about the Peri ideon and its date, scope, and aims. While she pays careful attention to the details of the text, she also relates it to contemporary philosophical concerns. The book will be valuable for anyone interested in metaphysics ancient or modern. |

Metaphysics $42.45 This essential core text introduces readers to metaphysics. In thoughtful and engaging prose, Peter van Inwagen examines three profound questions: What are the most general features of the world? Why is there a world? The new chapter presents a theory of the nature of being and proceeds to apply this theory to two problems of ontology: the problem of non-existent objects and the problem of universals. Equally valuable as a textbook in a university course or an introduction to metaphysical thinking for the interested layperson, " Metaphysics" remains a fascinating book for a wide range of readers, from first-time students to the most sophisticated philosophers. Contents 1. Introduction Part One: The Way the World Is 2. Individuality 3. Externality 4. Temporality 5. Objectivity Part Two: Why the World Is 6. Necessary Being: The Ontological Argument 7. Understanding Indian Movies: Culture, Cognition, and Cinematic Imagination $35.2 Indian movies are among the most popular in the world. However, despite increased availability and study, these films remain misunderstood and underappreciated in much of the English-speaking world, in part for cultural reasons. In this book, Patrick Colm Hogan sets out through close analysis and explication of culturally particular information about Indian history, Hindu metaphysics, Islamic spirituality, Sanskrit aesthetics, and other Indian traditions to provide necessary cultural contexts for understanding Indian films. Hogan analyzes eleven important films, using them as the focus to explore the topics of plot, theme, emotion, sound, and visual style in Indian cinema. These films draw on a wide range of South Asian cultural traditions and are representative of the greater whole of Indian cinema. By learning to interpret these examples with the tools Hogan provides, the reader will be able to take these skills and apply them to other Indian films. But this study is not simply culturalist. Hogan also takes up key principles from cognitive neuroscience to illustrate that all cultures share perceptual, cognitive, and emotional elements that, when properly interpreted, can help to bridge gaps between seemingly disparate societies. Hogan locates the specificity of Indian culture in relation to human universals, and illustrates this cultural-cognitive synthesis through his detailed interpretations of these films. This book will help both scholars and general readers to better understand and appreciate Indian cinema. |

Spring Poems Along the Rio Grande $8.1 In a Whitmanesque voice that aims toward American universals, while remaining grounded in his Chicano ancestry, Jimmy Santiago Baca explores the cycles of the seasons and the cycles of life in beautiful and accessible poems. In "Spring Poems Along the Rio Grande," Jimmy Santiago Baca continues his daily pilgrimage through the meadows, riverbanks, and bosques of the Rio Grande where winter dies, spring explodes, and inextricable links between the human spirit and the natural world are revealed–"the river and I see through each other’s skins / behind the eyes into the tunnels of water-bone and rushing marrow." These poems expand upon those in Baca’s "Winter Poems Along the Rio Grande"–his visions of love and loss, poverty and renewal, redemption and war are reflected in the rocks, trees and animals of his beloved New Mexico. In "Spring Poems" the words of the river "rise around thorny thickets / then descend again into the burbling stubble," and the poet surrenders himself to this place where his own words are woven by "a thumb-nail-sized yellow spider/ with poppy seed eyes." |

An Elderly Eclectic Gentleman $33.19 There are 294 topics in this book and you can open it at any page. The book, like my muse, skips on the surface of the waters like a flat stone, but will only rest when it finally sinks. The pieces reveal that I learned more from my missteps over the years than any triumph I may have stumbled over. While I don’t divulge all the events of my secret life, the touchstones of growing up on the Bald Prairie as a railroad boy, of the practice of Medicine on the Wet Coast, and the embrace by the bucolic and ample arms of Mother Nature in the Southern Gulf Islands in the Salish Sea, gave me food for thought.I take the Oath of Hippocrates seriously, so I do not divulge the secret knowledge of my patients, which is my trust The scant reference to patient matters provided here is in the public record and therefore not a violation. We are like bread dough in the hands of Mother Nature and The Almighty; beaten and kneaded on the breadboard of life; the yeast provided by those great Universals; allowed to rise and beaten again; risen and cooked in the oven of the world to a sublime end product. If you open this book it will be a little like opening Fibber McGee’s hall closet Odds and sods will tumble out |

The Consolation of Philosophy of Boethius (Dodo Press) $15.62 Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (c. 480-524 or 525) was a Christian philosopher of the 6th century. He was born in Rome to an ancient and important family which included emperors Petronius Maximus and Olybrius and many consuls. He was executed by King Theodoric the Great, who suspected him of conspiring with the Byzantine Empire. Boethius’s most popular work is The Consolation of Philosophy, which he wrote in prison while awaiting his execution, but his lifelong project was a deliberate attempt to preserve ancient classical knowledge, particularly philosophy. He intended to translate all the works of Aristotle and Plato from the original Greek into Latin. He also wrote a commentary on the Isagoge by Porphyry, which highlighted the existence of the problem of universals. Besides these advanced philosophical works, he is also reported to have translated important Greek texts for the topics of the quadrivium. He also wrote theological treatises, which generally involve support for the orthodox position against Arian ideas and other contemporary religious debates. |

Linguistics, 4th Edition: An Introduction to Language and Communication $3.94 The fourth edition of "Linguistics" has been thoroughly updated and revised to reflect the increasing confluence of linguistics and cognitive science. This is especially evident in the chapter on language acquisition, which now includes sections on the acquisition of morphology, syntax, and pragmatic competence. More special topics have also been added to give teachers greater freedom to shape courses to their own interests. The basic structure of the book, however, remains unchanged, with its focus on a small set of linguistic concepts that are fundamental to the field and that will allow students to get a feel for how work in different areas of linguistics is actually done. A new and expanded third edition of the companion "Linguistics Workbook" adds complementary material on universals and cross-language data. "Linguistics" is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the structural and interpretive aspects of language: morphology, phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, language variation, and language change. The second part is cognitively oriented and includes chapters on pragmatics, the psychology of language, language acquisition, and language and the brain. This new edition adds special topics to the chapters on morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, acquisition, and language and the brain. |

English: Meaning and Culture $39.29 It is widely accepted that English is the first truly global language and lingua franca. Its dominance has even led to its use and adaptation by local communities for their own purposes and needs. One might see English in this context as being simply a neutral, universal vehicle for the expression of local thoughts and ideas. In fact, English words and phrases have embedded in them a wealth of cultural baggage that is invisible to most native speakers. Anna Wierzbicka, a distinguished linguist known for her theories of semantics, has written the first book that connects the English language with what she terms "Anglo" culture. Wierzbicka points out that language and culture are not just interconnected, but inseparable. This is evident to non-speakers trying to learn puzzling English expressions. She uses original research to investigate the "universe of meaning" within the English language (both grammar and vocabulary) and places it in historical and geographical perspective. For example, she looks at the history of the terms "right" and "wrong" and how with the influence of the Reformation "right" came to mean "correct." She examines the ideas of "fairness" and "reasonableness" and shows that, far from being cultural universals, they are in fact unique creations of modern English. This engrossing and fascinating work of scholarship should appeal not only to linguists and others concerned with language and culture, but the large group of scholars studying English and English as a second language. |

Putting Metaphysics First: Essays on Metaphysics and Epistemology $47.36 Michael Devitt presents a series of essays in which he argues for an uncompromisingly realist worldview. He starts with realism about universals, dismissing Plato’s notorious "one over many" problem. Several chapters argue for a fairly uncompromisingly realist view of the external physical world of commonsense and science. Both the nonfactualism of moral noncognitivism and positivistic instrumentalism and deflationism about truth are found to rest on an antirealism that is hard to characterize. A case is presented for moral realism. Various biological realisms are considered. Finally, an argument is presented for an unfashionable biological essentialism. The second part of the book is epistemological. Devitt argues against the a priori and for a Quinean naturalism. The intuitions that so dominate "armchair philosophy" are empirical not a priori. Throughout the book there is an emphasis on the distinction between metaphysical issues about what there is and what it’s like from semantic issues about meaning, truth, and reference. Another central theme, captured in the title, is that we should "put metaphysics first." We should approach epistemology and semantics from a metaphysical perspective rather than vice versa. The epistemological turn in modern philosophy, and the linguistic turn in contemporary philosophy, were something of disasters. |

The Decline and Fall of the Lettered City: Latin America in the Cold War $38.11 The cultural Cold War in Latin America was waged as a war of values–artistic freedom versus communitarianism, Western values versus national cultures, the autonomy of art versus a commitment to liberation struggles–and at a time when the prestige of literature had never been higher. The projects of the historic avant-garde were revitalized by an anti-capitalist ethos and envisaged as the opposite of the republican state. "The Decline and Fall of the Lettered City" charts the conflicting universals of this period, the clash between avant-garde and political vanguard. This was also a twilight of literature at the threshold of the great cultural revolution of the seventies and eighties, a revolution to which the Cold War indirectly contributed. In the eighties, civil war and military rule, together with the rapid development of mass culture and communication empires, changed the political and cultural map. A long-awaited work by an eminent Latin Americanist widely read throughout the world, this book will prove indispensable to anyone hoping to understand Latin American literature and society. Jean Franco guides the reader across minefields of cultural debate and histories of highly polarized struggle. Focusing on literary texts by Garcia Marquez, Vargas Llosa, Roa Bastos, and Juan Carlos Onetti, conducting us through this contested history with the authority of an eyewitness, Franco gives us an engaging overview as involving as it is moving. |

Love and Shame and Love (Hardcover) $26.73 Alexander Popper can`t stop remembering. Four years old when his father tossed him into Lake Michigan, he was told, Sink or swim, kid. In his mind, he`s still bobbing in that frigid water. The rest of this novel`s vivid cast of characters also struggle to remain afloat: Popper`s mother, stymied by an unhappy marriage, seeks solace in the relentless energy of Chicago; his brother, Leo, shadow boss of the family, retreats into books; paternal grandparents, Seymour and Bernice, once high fliers, now mourn for long lost days; his father, a lawyer and would-be politician obsessed with his own success, fails to see that the family is falling apart; and his college girlfriend, the fiercely independent Kat, wrestles with impossible choices.Covering four generations of the Popper family, Peter Orner illuminates the countless ways that love both makes us whole and completely unravels us. A comic and sorrowful tapestry of memory of connection and disconnection, Love and Shame and Love explores the universals with stunning originality and wisdom. |

Ockham`s Theory of Terms $39.09 William of Ockham, the most prestigious philosopher of the fourteenth century, was a late Scholastic thinker who is regarded as the founder of Nominalism, the school of thought that denies that universals have any reality apart from the individual things signified by the universal or general term. Ockham`s Summa Logicae was intended as a basic text in philosophy, but it`s originality and scope encompass his whole system of philosophy. Yet the paucity of English translations and the structural complexity of the Latin have made the Summit, until now, almost completely inaccessible. Here Michael Loux has translated the first part of the Summa, one of the most original and influential medieval texts in logic.Preceding the translation are two essays: The first focuses on Ockham`s ontology; the second deals with his theory of supposition. They are meant to introduce the reader to the central themes of Part I of the Summary, but, while introductory, these essays incorporate a controversial interpretation of Ockham which is intended to suggest a continuity between his philosophy and the work of contemporary analytic philosophy. |

The Metaphysics of Knowledge (Paperback) $88.9 The Metaphysics of Knowledge presents the thesis that knowledge is an absolutely fundamental relation, with an indispensable role to play in metaphysics, philosophical logic, and philosophy of mind and language. Knowledge has been generally assumed to be a propositional attitude like belief. But Keith Hossack argues that knowledge is not a relation to a content; rather, it a relation to a fact. This point of view allows us to explain many of the concepts of philosophical logic in terms of knowledge. Hossack provides a theory of facts as structured combinations of particulars and universals, and presents a theory of content as the property of a mental act that determines its value for getting knowledge. He also defends a theory of representation in which the conceptual structure of a content is taken to picture the fact it represents. This permits definitions to be given of reference, truth, and necessity in terms of knowledge. Turning to the metaphysics of mind and language, Hossack argues that a conscious state is one that is identical with knowledge of its own occurrence. This allows us to characterise subjectivity, and, by illuminating the `I`-concept, allows us to gain a better understanding of the concept of a person. Language is then explained in terms of knowledge, as a device used by a community of persons for exchanging knowledge by testimony. The Metaphysics of Knowledge concludes that knowledge is too fundamental to be constituted by something else, such as one`s functional or physical state; other things may cause knowledge, but do not constitute it. |

Principles of Politics (Hardcover) $189.45 "Claims of knowledge and of `principles` regarding political matters, both empirical and moral, have been made over the millennia but never without contention. This book is about some of the empirical and moral generalizations arrived at in what might becalled the new political science. The book deals with the findings directly, and how one goes about justifying such claims. It reveals how the quality of the justification determines the quality of the claims. The principle foundations used to develop the arguments or justification are those of rational choice and social justice theories. But given the diversity of claims within the well reasoned philosophical traditions, we need more than reason to establish (or for that matter, except in cases of contradiction, disestablish) claims of knowledge about politics. Empirical findings, especially from experiments, are brought in to evaluate the validity of the claims. The principles discussed improve our understanding of concepts such as social welfare, collective action, altruism, other-regardingness, distributive justice, group interest, and more. The methods employed help us understand what is universal to all of politics. This volume zeros in on these universals with an eye to both the empirical problemsof political behavior and some of the normative conundrums such as what constitutes social justice. It identifies some of the main candidates for principles in both categories, and helps the reader to understand how to justify any such candidate"– |

Global Literacies: Lessons on Business Leadership and National Cultures $3.95 Throughout the world, languages differ, but the business questions are the same. In French and Japanese, Hebrew and English, executives are asking, "How can I survive and thrive in the borderless, global marketplace?" For answers, the authors of Global Literacies went straight to the leaders themselves — the CEOs of thousands of corporations around the globe. Two lessons emerged. First, there are leadership universals that every executive and manager needs to practice in order to be world-class at home and abroad. The second defied conventional wisdom: in the borderless economy, culture doesn’t matter less, it matters more. Around the world, business leaders apply their own experiences — personal, professional, and cultural — to an ever-expanding world of Dutch colleagues, Brazilian suppliers, Taiwanese manufacturers, and Chinese competitors. These leaders are trying to become globally literate…and Global Literacies is for, and about, them. No one knows this better than CEOs of successful global companies such as Japan’s Canon, Sweden’s Ericsson, Taiwan’s Acer Computers, the U.K.’s British Telecommunications, and U.S.-based Coca-Cola. In Global Literacies, a team of researchers led by Robert Rosen, Ph.D., of Healthy Companies International, and Watson Wyatt Worldwide have produced the first model of international business success based on a wide-ranging landmark study of global leaders and their world-class companies. Global Literacies documents the exclusive results of a worldwide survey of over one thousand senior executives and in-depth interviews with CEOs of seventy-eight companies — companies representing 3.5 million employees in more than 200 countries, and with more than $725 billion in annual sales. Global Literacies offers compelling new insights and business tools: The Global Leadership Universals Learn the new literacies of business: * Personal Literacy — understanding and valuing yourself * Social Literacy — engaging and challenging people * Business Literacy — focusing and mobilizing your business * Cultural Literacy — valuing and leveraging cultural difference The Global Success Quotient Learn which are the most globally active, financially successful companies — and countries — in the world, understand how they got there, and apply those learnings to your own organization. The Cultures of Twenty-first-Century Business Develop ways to see global challenges and opportunities, think with an international mindset, act with fresh global-centric leadership behaviors, and mobilize world-class companies — whether you’re a multinational giant, a domestic manufacturer, or a local community organization. National Profiles With sophisticated profiles of thirty countries, and survey data from eighteen national cultures — from the Tolerant Traders of the Netherlands to China’s Ancient Modernizers and the Optimistic Entrepreneurs of the United States, Global Literacies is a groundbreaking and fascinating work on the most |

What Is Meaning? $25.16 The tradition descending from Frege and Russell has typically treated theories of meaning either as theories of meanings (propositions expressed), or as theories of truth conditions. However, propositions of the classical sort don’t exist, and truth conditions can’t provide all the information required by a theory of meaning. In this book, one of the world’s leading philosophers of language offers a way out of this dilemma. Traditionally conceived, propositions are denizens of a "third realm" beyond mind and matter, "grasped" by mysterious Platonic intuition. As conceived here, they are cognitive-event types in which agents predicate properties and relations of things–in using language, in perception, and in nonlinguistic thought. Because of this, one’s acquaintance with, and knowledge of, propositions is acquaintance with, and knowledge of, events of one’s cognitive life. This view also solves the problem of "the unity of the proposition" by explaining how propositions can be genuinely representational, and therefore bearers of truth. The problem, in the traditional conception, is that sentences, utterances, and mental states are representational because of the relations they bear to inherently representational Platonic complexes of universals and particulars. Since we have no way of understanding how such structures can be representational, independent of interpretations placed on them by agents, the problem is unsolvable when so conceived. However, when propositions are taken to be cognitive-event types, the order of explanation is reversed and a natural solution emerges. Propositions are representational because they are constitutively related to inherently representational cognitive acts. Strikingly original, "What Is Meaning?" is a major advance. |

On the Origin of Stories: Evolution, Cognition, and Fiction $44.49 A century and a half after the publication of "Origin of Species, " evolutionary thinking has expanded beyond the field of biology to include virtually all human-related subjects–anthropology, archeology, psychology, economics, religion, morality, politics, culture, and art. Now a distinguished scholar offers the first comprehensive account of the evolutionary origins of art and storytelling. Brian Boyd explains why we tell stories, how our minds are shaped to understand them, and what difference an evolutionary understanding of human nature makes to stories we love. Art is a specifically human adaptation, Boyd argues. It offers tangible advantages for human survival, and it derives from play, itself an adaptation widespread among more intelligent animals. More particularly, our fondness for storytelling has sharpened social cognition, encouraged cooperation, and fostered creativity. After considering art as adaptation, Boyd examines Homer’s "Odyssey" and Dr. Seuss’s "Horton Hears a Who " demonstrating how an evolutionary lens can offer new understanding and appreciation of specific works. What triggers our emotional engagement with these works? What patterns facilitate our responses? The need to hold an audience’s attention, Boyd underscores, is the fundamental problem facing all storytellers. Enduring artists arrive at solutions that appeal to cognitive universals: an insight out of step with contemporary criticism, which obscures both the individual and universal. Published for the bicentenary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of "Origin of Species, " Boyd’s study embraces a Darwinian view of human nature and art, and offers a credo for a new humanism. |

The Nature of Paleolithic Art $50.36 The cave paintings and other preserved remnants of Paleolithic peoples shed light on a world little known to us, one so deeply embedded in time that information about it seems unrecoverable. While art historians have wrestled with these images and objects, very few scientists have weighed in on Paleolithic art as artifacts of a complex, living society. R. Dale Guthrie is one of the first to do so, and his monumental volume "The Nature of Paleolithic Art" is a landmark study that will change the shape of our understanding of these marvelous images. With a natural historian’s keen eye for observation, and as one who has spent a lifetime using bones and other excavated materials to piece together past human behavior and environments, Guthrie demonstrates that Paleolithic art is a mode of expression we can comprehend to a remarkable degree and that the perspective of natural history is integral to that comprehension. He employs a mix of ethology, evolutionary biology, and human universals to access these distant cultures and their art and artifacts. Guthrie uses innovative forensic techniques to reveal new information; estimating, for example, the ages and sexes of some of the artists, he establishes that Paleolithic art was not just the creation of male shamans. With more than 3,000 images, "The Nature of Paleolithic Art" offers the most comprehensive representation of Paleolithic art ever published and a radical (and controversial) new way of interpreting it. The variety and content of these images–most of which have never been available or easily accessible to nonspecialists or even researchers–will astonish you. This wonderfully written work of natural history, of observation and evidence, tells the great story of our deepest past. |

The Poems of Emily Dickinson: Reading Edition $17.63 Emily Dickinson, poet of the interior life, imagined words/swords, hurling barbed syllables/piercing. Nothing about her adult appearance or habitation revealed such a militant soul. Only poems, written quietly in a room of her own, often hand-stitched in small volumes, then hidden in a drawer, revealed her true self. She did not live in time but in universals–an acute, sensitive nature reaching out boldly from self-referral to a wider, imagined world. Dickinson died without fame; only a few poems were published in her lifetime. Her legacy was later rescued from her desk–an astonishing body of work, much of which has since appeared in piecemeal editions, sometimes with words altered by editors or publishers according to the fashion of the day. Now Ralph Franklin, the foremost scholar of Dickinson’s manuscripts, has prepared an authoritative one-volume edition of all extant poems by Emily Dickinson–1,789 poems in all, the largest number ever assembled. This reading edition derives from his three-volume work, "The Poems of Emily Dickinson: Variorum Edition" (1998), which contains approximately 2,500 sources for the poems. In this one-volume edition, Franklin offers a single reading of each poem–usually the latest version of the entire poem–rendered with Dickinson’s spelling, punctuation, and capitalization intact. "The Poems of Emily Dickinson: Reading Edition" is a milestone in American literary scholarship and an indispensable addition to the personal library of poetry lovers everywhere. |

Imagine There’s No Woman: Ethics and Sublimation $19.41 Winner in the 2003 AAUP Book, Jacket, and Journal Competition in the Scholarly Illustrated category. Jacques Lacan claimed that his theory of feminine sexuality, including the infamous proposition, "the Woman does not exist," constituted a revision of his earlier work on "the ethics of psychoanalysis." In "Imagine There’s No Woman," Joan Copjec shows how Freud’s ragtag, nearly incoherent notion of sublimation was refashioned by Lacan to become the key term in his ethics. To trace the link between feminine being and Lacan’s ethics of sublimation, Copjec argues, one must take the negative proposition about the woman’s existence not as just another nominalist denunciation of thought’s illusions about the existence of universals, but as recognition of the power of thought, which posits and gives birth to the difference of objects from themselves. While the relativist position currently dominant insists on the difference between my views and another’s, Lacan insists on this difference within the object I see. The popular position fuels the disaffection with which we regard a world in a state of decomposition, whereas the Lacanian alternative urges our investment in a world that awaits our invention. In the book’s first part, Copjec explores positive acts of invention/sublimation: Antigone’s burial of her brother, the silhouettes by the young black artist Kara Walker, Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills, and Stella Dallas’s final gesture toward her daughter in the well-known melodrama. In the second part, the focus shifts to sublimation’s adversary, the cruelly uncreative superego, as Copjec analyzes Kant’s concept of radical evil, envy’s corruption of liberal demands for equality and justice, and the difference between sublimation and perversion. Maintaining her focus on artistic texts, she weaves her arguments through discussions of Pasolini’s "Salo," the film noir classic "Laura," and the Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination. |
