Boat Submarine

On 8 August 2000, a crowd gathered at the port of Charleston, South Carolina. They were there to observe the recovery of a vessel which had been under water for 136 years, a ship that had been touted as the most important underwater archaeological find of the 20th century.
The public was waiting for the recovery of the HL Hunley, the Civil War era submarine that was widely recognized as the first real submarine to sink a warship. While the excavation of the Hunley was a significant and exciting history of the ship is so interesting and meaningful.
While submarines already had almost 100 years of history in the United States, the first to be used during the American Revolution, the Confederate Hunley was the first submarine that could truly be considered a precursor of the modern submarine.
The Hunley's story begins in New Orleans in 1862. Horace Lawson Hunley, James McClintock and Baxter Watson began work on a small submarine called the Pioneer. Although the pioneer was tested in the Mississippi River, working in the small submarine was abandoned when the Union army began converge in New Orleans.
Hunley, McClintock, and Watson moved to Mobile, Alabama, where he began working with the engineers Thomas Park and Thomas Lyons. Other submarine, American Diver, was built and abandoned as too slow before the men began building what would become the Hunley.
Known for the development and construction as the "Dolphin", the Hunley to the height of his nickname, with a sleek design that looks years ahead of its time, the Hunley was a boat 40 feet long made especially to subvert and destroy the Union ships.
The Hunley was a relatively small boat, hull with a height of just over four feet, designed to be operated by a crew of eight – seven to turn the crank of the propeller by hand, one for lead and guide her. At each end of the nave were the ballast tanks that can be flooded by valves to bring the ship to travel under water or pumped dry pumps hand, when the ship needed to get to the surface. These ballast tanks with the support of iron weights that screw on the bottom of the Hunley, if the ship needed to raise rapidly to the surface, these ballasts could be dropped from inside the vessel.
After a demonstration of success, the Hunley was sent to Charleston by rail and drafted into service by the Navy of the Confederacy, with mixed results, definitely, two test runs, the ship took the lives of thirteen men, including her inventor, Horace Lawson Hunley.
Undeterred by the Hunley is less than his brilliant career, the Navy of the Confederacy loaded forward with plans for the ship, and on 17 February 1864, the submarine was used in its first – and only – the mission: the sinking of the USS Housatonic.
The Union blockade of Southern ports has crippled the South, in particular the blockade of Charleston. The Housatonic, 1240-ton steam-powered warships, equipped with a dozen big guns, was used in the blockade of Charleston Harbor.
Confederate Navy Lieutenant George E. Dixon, along with a crew of seven men they had offered for the first mission of the Hunley, attacked the Housatonic, and made the ship by a torpedo in the hull. The Housatonic and five of his crew were at the bottom of the bay in minutes, the Hunley was to meet a similar fate.
The reasons for the sinking of the Hunley is unclear. It has been theorized that The torpedo that sank the Housatonic also damaged the Hunley as well, or that the torpedo actually failed, taking the submarine along with the Housatonic. Whatever the reason, the submarine sank in Charleston harbor with eight of its crew inside.
Despite their tragic fate of the Hunley marine engineers demonstrated that a submersible vessel in fact be created for the destruction of enemy ships, forever changing modern naval warfare.
After its excavation in 2000, the Hunley was brought to the Warren Lasch Conservation decommissioned in downtown Charleston Navy Yard, where it now rests in a specially designed water tank while in the conservation process. In 2004, its crew, identified by DNA testing, was buried with military honors Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston.

The Submarine Boys, Volume 1: …on Duty & …Trial Trip $24.64 A voyage in an undersea boat What boy has not done so time and again in his youthful dreams? "The Submarine Boys" did it in reality, diving into the dark depths of the sea, then, like Father Neptune, rising dripping from the deep to sunlight and safety. Yet it was not all easy sailing for the Submarine Boys, for these hardy young "undersea sailors" experienced a full measure of excitement and had their share of thrills, as all who sail the seas are certain to do. The author, Lieutenant Commander Victor G. Durham, knows undersea boats, and the reader who voyages with him may look forward to an instructive as well as lively cruise as The Submarine Boys fend off spies, saboteurs, and jealous rivals. * * * * In "The Submarine Boys on Duty" we meet three teenaged boys, Jack Benton, Eph Somers, and Hal Hastings as they convince inventor David Pollard and shipbuilder/company president Jacob Farnum into letting them join the Pollard Submarine Boat Company, and help build the company’s first submarine boat, the "Pollard," despite attempts at sabotage by a former employee. A sea rescue, a prank on a Naval battleship, and a desperate fight with a crazy crewman deep under the sea are just a few of their adventures. * * * * In "The Submarine Boys’ Trial Trip" the boys help defend the submarine company from a financier’s attempt to seize control by any means possible, while at the same time trying to entice the U.S. Navy into purchasing their submarine and securing a contract for more. Stopping a mutiny, sneaking up on a Naval gunboat, and devising a method to escape a sunken submarine keep the young men on their toes. * * * * "The Submarine Boys on Duty" and "The Submarine Boys’ Trial Trip" were published in 1909. This volume includes the original eight illustrations. * * * * Check out the other children’s and juvenile books published by Flying Chipmunk Publishing |

Beneath the Dardanelles: The Australian Submarine at Gallipoli $19.76 The Gallipoli campaign is traditionally remembered as the action on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Australia, but an important addition to that land campaign was the part played by the Australian submarine HMAS AE2. The AE2 achieved a daring passage through the Dardanelles on April 25, 1915 when Anzac troops were landing on the other side at Anzac Cove. The Royal and French navies’ previous attempts at passage had ended in disaster. AE2′s mission to ‘run amuck’ ended after five days in the Sea of Marmara when it was caught by the Turkish Sultanhisar torpedo boat. After being holed, AE2′s captain Stoker scuttled the submarine and its crew was saved by Sultanhisar’s captain, Ali Riza. "Beneath the Dardanelles "tells AE2′s story from both the Australian and Turkish perspectives, and features extracts from the memoirs of the two captains. Rarely in military books are both sides of a battle presented so evenly. The submarine lay undiscovered on the bottom of the sea until 1998 and awaits its destiny as the largest historical Australian relic of the Gallipoli campaign. The future of AE2 will be newsworthy for years to come and this book makes an important contribution to that story. |

Submarine Operational Effectiveness in the 20th Century: Part One (1900 – 1939) $26.24 A very new weapons system, the lurking submarine with its self-propelled torpedoes fired from ambush changed the complexion of naval warfare forever. Both warships and merchant ships were at risk. In 1914 U-boats demonstrated their capability to sink major warships. During 1915 they turned their attention to merchant ships and began to sink or capture them in wholesale lots. U-boats nearly won the First World War for Germany by forcing Great Britain into peace negotiations in late 1917. U-boats sank or captured over 6,100 ships during WW I. In April 1917 England had only six weeks grain supply left, and apparently had no adequate way to deal with the unrestricted U-boat offensive that Germany unleashed in February of that year. "Submarine Operational Effectiveness in the 20th Century" deals with the first strategic submarine campaign and its outcome. It goes on to outline submarine development by major nations during the 1920s and 1930s, including submarine use during the Spanish Civil War. It ends in 1939, on the eve of World War Two, a war in which two massive submarine campaigns would be waged: the first by Nazi Germany against the Allies; and the second by the United States against the Empire of Japan. |

Submarine! $10.39 THE WAR BENEATH THE WAVES For the World War II submariner, every day was a life-or-death trial: going to sea for months at a time; existing in dank, claustrophobic conditions; enduring long stretches of monotonous silence punctuated by adrenaline-spiked episodes of paralyzing fear and victorious elation. It was a duty few men could handle — and even fewer would survive. This is the true story of those brave men who served and too often died under the ocean surface, written by a man who was there. Edward L. Beach masterfully weaves his gripping experiences aboard the USS "Trigger" with those of other boats fighting the war in the Pacific. Part action-packed combat chronicle, part testament to the courageous sacrifices made by those who never came back, this is a compelling eyewitness account of the war as few have seen it. |

U-Boat War 1914-1918: Volume 2-Three Accounts of German Submarines During the Great War: The Journal of Submarine Commander Von Fo $21.98 Three invaluable and exciting accounts of the German U-Boats of the Great War Following the success of the original Leonaur volume concerning the U-Boat War 1914-1918, the Leonaur editors have brought together three more interesting and vital accounts for the sake of good value and because, in view of their comparatively small size, they are unlikely to see individual re-publication in modern times. Here, in volume two, the first account is the journal of a U-Boat Commander at war and its author eloquently describes his patrols and his attacks on merchant shipping. Konig’s account of the ‘Deutschland’ may be a revelation to many. Konig captained an unarmed commercial submarine until his vessel was eventually commissioned into the Imperial German Navy. It plied a highly successful and lucrative submersible merchant trade to the still neutral United States of America under the waters of a hostile Atlantic Ocean patrolled by the Royal Navy. The final piece in this trilogy of U-Boat accounts is an interesting and immediate account which draws the reader inside the close community of the submariners and contains much vital detail, dialogue and inevitable humour. A tour-de-force for submarine enthusiasts, this special Leonaur edition is available in softcover and hardcover with dust jacket. |

Submarine Sailor: 198 Depth Charges and His Faith $28.44 This is a true story about the authoras life, from his very early years to the end of the Second World War. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1924. There are episodes about his childhood, work and play in Baltimore, about life as a city boy in the summers on a farm in Frederick, Maryland, and stories about how he aqualifieda to become a submarine sailor. His boat, the USS Besugo 321, left New London, Connecticut, down through the Panama Canal, stopped at Pearl Harbor and went out to the South Pacific to engage the enemy. That started the test of faith. There were white knuckle times diving deep and experiencing the explosions of 198 depth charges. Heas included humorous accounts about shore leaves in Australia for their well-deserved rest, recreation and romance. And there was a mascot on board during all this time, a dog named aSugiea whom they all agreed was the smartest sailor on board. |

Electric Boat Corporation $18.95 Electric Boat Corporation has been a world leader in submarine development, design, and construction for more than a century. In 1900, the company delivered the Holland, the first submarine accepted by the United States Navy. Fifty-five years later, it turned fantasy into fact by sending the worldas first nuclear-powered ship, the submarine Nautilus, off on its maiden voyage. It later built the worldas first ballistic missileafiring submarine, the George Washington, and most of the nationas current underseas fleet. Between those years, it pioneered standardized construction of merchant ships, submarine chasers, torpedo boats, and yachts and also produced airplanes, fishing trawlers, diesel engines, and electric motors. This collection of more than 200 archival photographs traces the companyas sometimes roller-coaster existence through 10 historic decades when Americaaand Electric Boat Corporationagrew into an industrial giant. It is an engaging collective portrait of American ingenuity, know-how, and persistence driving technology to new heights. |

Voyage of the Deutschland: The First Merchant Submarine (1916) $34.87 This superbly crafted collection of classic literature preserves the celebrated works of the foremost writers of naval history, biography, and fiction. Since 1984 the series, edited by Jack Sweetman, has brought back into print a total of over sixty titles. The original unabridged texts are accompanied by authoritative new introductions and notes. By 1916 the German merchant fleet had been driven from the seas by a British blockade that had cut off Germany from foreign markets and put the nation on the verge of economic collapse. Germany’s desperate response was the Deutschland, a merchant U-boat uniquely designed with an exceptionally wide beam to carry cargo. Its brief career as a blockade-runner captured international headlines, and Paul Konig’s fast-moving account of its maiden voyage was one of the most popular books of the year when first published in the United States in 1917. Although an acknowledged piece of German propaganda, the story is nevertheless a thrilling one that has attracted readers for decades. Veteran submariners and landlubbers alike have been fascinated by the author’s descriptions of life on board the World War I submarine. Ordered to transport valuable cargo to America and return with equally valuable cargo, the captain intended to make a joke of the blockade. The trip was no ordinary passage, however, and Konig keeps readers on the edge of their seats with his tales of the Deutschland barely managing to evade British ASW on its way to the port of Baltimore, where Konig and his crew were welcomed as heroes. The informative introduction that accompanies this new edition of the work has been written by Dwight R. Messimer, the author of a study of theU-boat’s entire career called The Merchant U-Boat and Find and Destroy: Antisubmarine Warfare in World War I |

Aircraft Versus Submarines: The Evolution of the Anti-Submarine Aircraft, 1912-1945 $27.91 The first aircraft to sink a submarine was a small flying boat of the Austro-Hungarian Naval Air Arm. The year was 1916 and by that time in World War I, the airplane had come to be appreciated as an important antisubmarine weapon by all combatants. With the arrival of World War II the survival of Great Britain was put in doubt by the massive destruction inflicted on the North Atlantic lifeline by German submarines. The development of anti-submarine warfare from the air was a major factor in decreasing the number of casualties to Allied merchant shipping. This book tells the story of the cat-and-mouse tactics employed by aviators and submariners to outwit each other. It also covers the development of electronic warfare and purpose-built weapons and the role they played in the lethal duel fought over World War II waters. This new edition of a book that has become a standard on the subject includes accounts of some of the most dramatic actions during both wars. |

Under Pressure: The Last Voyage of Submarine S-Five $3.95 Hanging on display in the United States Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., is a battered and scratched steel plate, two feet in diameter, edged with more than one hundred little semicircles. For more than eighty years, people have wondered how it came to be there and at the story it could tell. "Under Pressure: The Final Voyage of Submarine S-Five" is that story. On Monday, August 30, 1920, the "S-Five," the newest member of the U.S. Navy’s fleet of submarines, departs Boston on her first cruise — to Baltimore for a recruiting appearance at the end of the week. Two days later, as part of a routine test of the submarine’s ability to crash dive, her crew’s failure to close a faulty valve sends seventy-five tons of seawater blasting in. Before the valve can be jury-rigged shut, the "S-Five" sits precariously on the ocean floor under 180 feet of water. Her electrical system is shut down, her radio too weak to transmit, and one drive motor is inoperable — and, because of a last-minute course change, the sub has gone down in a part of the Atlantic deliberately selected because it is well outside any regularly trafficked sea lanes. Rescue by a passing ship is virtually impossible. No one expects them in Baltimore for another two days. And forty hours worth of air is all they have left. The "S-Fives" are on their own. Her captain, Lieutenant Commander Charles M. "Savvy" Cooke Jr., tries to pump the seawater out, but each of three pumping systems fails in succession. The salt in the seawater combines with the sulfuric acid in the sub’s batteries to create a cloud of chlorine gas. They have little air, no water, and only the dimmest of light by which to plan their escape. By shiftingthe water in the sub toward the bow torpedo room, Cooke is able to stand the 240-foot-long sub on its nose, bringing it close to vertical, and, using trigonometry, he calculates that at least part of the boat’s stern is now above sea level. In a race against time — will the crew die of asphyxiation before chlorine gas poisoning? — Cooke assembles his crew into three-man teams charged with cutting a hole out of the highest point in the sub: the telephone-booth-size tiller room. With no acetylene torch, no power tools — nothing but ratchet drills and hacksaws — the crew must cut through nearly an inch of strengthened steel or die in the attempt. "Under Pressure" is the story of the thirty-six-hour-long ordeal of the crew of the "S-Five." It is a story of the courage, endurance, and incredible resourcefulness of the entire forty-man crew: of Charlie Grisham, the sub’s executive officer, a "mustang" promoted to the navy’s officer corps from the enlisted ranks; of Chief Electrician Ramon Otto, whose baby daughter was born just days before the "S-Five’s" departure; of Machinist’s Mate Fred Whitehead, who at the last minute is able to dog the all-important watertight hatches shut; |

The U-Boat Wars $19.83 The remarkably effective submarines (U-boats) of the German Navy devastated the Allies during the first part of World War II and very nearly brought British and American sea forces to their knees. Military historian Hoyt here describes the years when U-boat "wolf packs" under the command of Admiral Karl Doenitz terrorized the Allies, sinking a third of Britain’s battleships in 1939, and how the Allies came back, developing anti-submarine weapons that sent almost three-fourths of the U-boat crews to the bottom of the ocean. "The U-Boat Wars" is a gripping account of the battles at sea and the men–Doenitz, Churchill, sub-hunter Captain F. J. Walker, and others–who decided the fate of the Atlantic. |

Red November: Inside the Secret U.S.-Soviet Submarine War $5.36 Few know how close the world has come to annihilation better than the warriors who served America during the tense, forty-six-year struggle known as the Cold War. Yet for decades their work has remained shrouded in secrecy. Now, in this riveting new history, W. Craig Reed, a former U.S. Navy diver and fast-attack submariner, provides an eye-opening, pulse-pounding narrative of the underwater struggles and espionage operations between the United States and the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics that brought us to the brink of nuclear war several times. "Red November" is filled with new revelations and never-before-reported stories that take you deep beneath the surface and into the action during the entire Cold War period from 1945 through 1992. Reed served aboard submarines involved in espionage operations, and his father was a top naval intelligence specialist intimately involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Reed is one of the first authors to obtain in-depth interviews with dozens of navy divers, espionage operatives, submariners, and government officials on both sides (including several Soviet submarine captains), who describe the most daring and decorated missions of the conflict, including the top-secret Ivy Bells, Boresight, Bulls Eye, and Holystone operations. Other events, whose full details have not been made public until now, include: The harrowing underwater cat-and-mouse chase in October 1962 that almost resulted in the firing of nuclear-tipped torpedoes by Soviet "Foxtrot" subs and could have started World War III The alarming collision between the submarine USS "Drum" and a Soviet "Victor III"-class sub (an incident the author experienced firsthand), the American boat’s remarkable escape, and the all-out effort by enemy forces to hunt her down in 1981 The role the author’s father played in developing a highly classified, state-of-the-art system for detecting enemy subs that was instrumental in helping President Kennedy force Premier Khrushchev to back down at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis And the storm and resulting engine failure that trapped the USS "Seawolf" on the sea bottom during an espionage mission in Soviet waters that nearly took the lives of 190 sailors in 1981 Transcending traditional submarine, espionage, and Cold War accounts with its level of detail and first-person perspective, "Red November" is an up-close examination of one of the most dangerous periods in world history and an intimate look at the lives of those who participated in our country’s longest and most expensive underwater war. |

The Battle of the Atlantic: The Allies’ Submarine Fight Against Hitler’s Gray Wolves of the Sea $3.95 From 1939 until 1942, Hitler’s U-boats-the submarine fleet dubbed the "gray wolves"-threatened to accomplish what his air force had been unable to achieve: to starve Britain into submission. The ensuing struggle for control of the storm-tossed Atlantic trade routes became a full-scale war-within-a-war, and one which led to astounding losses: Allied powers would lose more than fifty thousand men, and fifteen million tons of shipping, over the course of the conflict.Through exclusive interviews with survivors on both sides-including those given for the first time by former U-boat crew members-historian and documentary producer Andrew Williams provides a riveting account of these crucial years of battle. Vividly recreating the claustrophobic and dangerous life on board, The Battle of the Atlantic succeeds in encompassing the whole experience of warfare as few other histories have, and forms an important contribution to our understanding of one of the greatest fights of the twentieth century. |
