Battery Slash

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and NEC, a leading electronics manufacturer, announced last Friday that will produce eco-car batteries. The measure based on the automaker's desire to catch up with rivals in the industry who have already started in green technology.

The third largest automaker NEC of Japan and are investing 490 million yen (4.1 million U.S. dollars, 3 million) to create a joint venture later this month to produce batteries Lithium-ion batteries for green vehicles, including electric and hybrid cars in 2009. "Co-development with Nissan has enabled a superior-class battery that we expect to spread in the market at a speed without equally, "Executive Vice President NEC Konosuke Kashima said.

Nissan will have a 50 per cent in Automotive Energy Supply Corp., which is now joint new business, while NEC and subsidiary and battery maker NEC Tokin Corp. owns a fifty percent combined.

Sales of hybrids and cars offer another environmentally friendly technology are still a fraction of standard models. Both Toyota and Honda have seen their brand image better from the introduction of advances such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic hybrids. Sales of Toyota and Honda small cars have increased in the U.S. and other overseas markets lately. The lawsuit is based on oil prices.

Nissan was near bankruptcy before entertaining an alliance with Renault SA of France in 1999. Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Renault and Nissan, who led the revival, in the past has played down the vitality of hybrids, which are expensive to develop and take time to catch on. Ghosn has emphasized innovations in gas engines, saying Nissan is working on its own hybrid technology.
