Keogh, Myles Walter was born on 25 March 1840, at Orchard House, Leighlinbridge, County Carlow, Ireland. Myles and his twelve siblings were reared in a comfortable circumstances, if not wealthy, and had chosen to live the life of a rancher who probably could have done. His maternal aunt Mary Blanchfield ultimately dear Myles the family estate in Kilkenny Castle called Clifden. But while Myles favorite brother, Tom, was content to follow a serious course for life, had something in the composition of the tall, thin, blue-eyed youth who longed for adventure. His career in many ways the epitome of itinerant wanderings of the "Geese Savages, "who sought glory on foreign shores, amid the clash of arms.

In March 1860, Pope Pius IX called upon the youth of Ireland, to help preserve the sovereignty of the Papal States, who were threatened with annexation by the armies of Piedmont-Sardinia. While many Italians, sympathetic to Piedmont supported the revolutionary forces of Garibaldi, considered the existence of the holdings of the Pope as an impediment to a united Italy, Catholic volunteers from across Europe gathered to support the Vatican.

Keogh was one of the 1,400 Irish who traveled to Italy, and in July was appointed lieutenant in a battalion of four companies stationed in the Adriatic port city of Ancona. On September 18, the main body of the 18,000-man papal army was defeated at the battle of Castelfidardo and Ancona was soon besieged by land and sea. The outnumbered defenders of the Pope put a strong defense to their inevitable capitulation on 29 September 1860. After a brief imprisonment in Genoa, Keogh and 45 fellow Irish traveled to Rome, where, at the invitation of Pius IX, who joined the Papal Guard and green company in uniform "Saint Patrick."

The handsome young lieutenant now wearing two medals for courage, Pro Petri Sede and Ordine di San Gregorio, but the fight by Keogh saw little point in staying in Rome. With the fury of civil war in the United States, the Secretary of State William H. Seward began looking for experienced European officers serve the Union, and asked a series of prominent clerics to assist in this endeavor. John Hughes, Archbishop of New York, traveled to Italy to recruit veterans the Papal War, and met with Keogh and his colleagues

Thus, in March 1862, Keogh, resigned as the Society of St. Patrick, and with his senior officer – 30 years old, Daniel J. Keily of Waterford – returned briefly to Ireland, then boarded the steamer bound from Liverpool to New Kangaroo York when the ship arrived on April 1. Another colleague of the pope, Joseph O'Keeffe – 19 years old, nephew of the Bishop of Cork met with Keogh and Keily in Manhattan. Through the intervention of Secretary of Seward three were given the rank of captain on 15 April and assigned to the staff of the Irish-born Brigadier General James Shields, whose forces were about to face the Confederate army of Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley.

He served as adjutant of many general officers and participated in over thirty battles, reaching the brevet rank of lieutenant colonel. With high recommendations came in the regular army as 2nd Lieutenant and two months later was a captain in the 7th Calvary, commanded by the company I.

Perhaps the greatest testament to the courage and leadership Keogh occurred at Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876. The senior captain of the five companies with Custer removed that day and a command of two squadrons in Custer's detachment, Keogh died up a "last" of its property, surrounded by men of Company I. When the sun blackened and dismembered dead were buried three days later, Keogh's body was found in the center of a group of soldiers that included his two sergeants, the company trumpeter and flag bearer. The slain officer was stripped but not mutilated, perhaps because of the papal medal he received from Pope Pius IX who was on a chain around her neck.
