Airplane Wing
Landing is the most difficult maneuver most pilots will ever perform. No wonder that the landing is the most dangerous time of any trip. I ran into an exercise that shortens the time needed to teach landings and dramatically improving the skills of my students landing far more intrigue. It is known as the 'Slow Dutch Roll.
A Dutch Roll is a rhythmic maneuver that most instructors agreement is as useful as patting your head while rubbing your belly. In contrast, the Slow Dutch Roll proved a powerful tool.
When the execution of a common Dutch census, to keep the nose of the plane pointing to a spot on the horizon, while rapidly moving their wings with ailerons and exploitation constant nose with the rudder pedals.
By moving the lever to the left, the nose wants right turn forces you to step on the left rudder pedal, but not much as you would in a turn. Then, as the bank increases, you have to step on the pedal of others to keep the nose steady. And so the exercise continues. But Why?
My colleagues and I do not like this exercise for two reasons. First, aileron – rudder coordination should focus on keeping the ball in the center. To put it another way, a good driver can make a cup of coffee in the instrument panel and go through a series of spins in both directions without sloshing the coffee. He / she must coordinate the ailerons and rudder properly to succeed. During a Dutch roll, coffee would be all over the cabin. Our second objection is that, in addition to teaching bad habits, almost no normal flight region, where the pilot executes a Dutch roll. We consider an ordinary Dutch roll as somewhere between useless and counterproductive.
In contrast, the Slow Dutch Roll (SDR) teaches you the skills needed in the takeoff and landing almost everyone and some other very useful skills.
I do not consider that a patent or copyright in the SDR. Not surprise me if some other flight instructor discovered before me. But it's best riders. I hope that as many pilots and instructors as possible to know about it and use it.
SDR, as the traditional Dutch roll, requires that the objective of the nose at one point and keep it there while changing the bank angle. Running very slowly, he teaches, among other things, precisely controlled landings and crosswind takeoffs.
For maximum benefit from SDR, you must practice at constant altitude and various airspeeds including slow flight with wheels down and flaps extended. Then do the same while slides into place at constant altitude, eventually practicing SDR at speeds above a post with the airplane configured for landing. Depending on your skill, you can begin the practice of SDR simply trying to keep the plane steady as you change the angle of bank slowly.
I recommend not only changing the angle of bank slow but steady operation of the bank for as long as 30 seconds or more. You'd be surprised what happens during these periods constant bank. With a wing down but the plane did not turn, lift the wing will begin to move the plane in the direction of the bank. As speeds aside, the changes relative wind direction. This wind shift requires changing the position of the rudder and aileron controls to maintain constant bank and address.
This continuous change in the control position, maintaining a constant attitude is the additional advantage of SDR. It teaches that essential skill that all good pilots have. For a good driver, you should be able to fly the plane to put you in the right attitude, regardless of whether the controls are. If you must move the controls continuously to maintain the right attitude, you will neither know nor care, but simply focus on maintaining the right attitude. With SDR, you can practice this skill in a safe, low stress altitude rather than during landing.
Having mastered SDR, you have mastered 90% of the ability required for safe use, landings accuracy. In a plane of light, in particular, should keep the plane pointed at the end of the runway, while keeping the wind off the track. By the domain of SDRs, which have dominated the necessary controlled slip in the vast majority of landings. For the SDR domain have also mastered the art of flight attitude. He has learned to put the airplane in the attitude you want and keep it there regardless of wind shifts and reduced speed – a skill essential in landing safe, smooth and precise.
