For some biological activity taking place in the body, the brain must send a message to that body part or organ for the activity to be performed. In the case of central sleep apnea, the brain sends inappropriate signals to the muscles responsible for breathing, resulting in repeated stop-start of breathing during sleep.

Central sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by episodes of cessation of breathing during sleep. The brain does not send the right messages to the muscles of respiration. Central sleep apnea is as common as sleep apnea and is counted as less than five percent of all sleep apnea together.

Symptoms:

Observed episodes of shortness of breath or breathing patterns abnormal during sleep
Suddenly, waking with shortness of breath, relief caused by sitting upright
Insomnia: inability to sleep and stay asleep
Hypersomnia – daytime sleepiness
Decreased concentration
Snoring

Snoring can be attributed to:

Enlarged tonsils – especially in children
Excess throat tissue
The loss of tone in the muscles of the throat
Weight gain
Alcohol
Certain medications

The use of alcohol and some drugs can cause relaxation of the muscles surrounding the throat, that can airway obstruction. The maintenance of the airway is of great importance and is always the first objective of any event. Without the permeability of adequate airway, life hangs by a thread and death may result if not attended to immediately.

Causes of central sleep apnea:

The periodic cessation of breathing during sleep
The Cheyne-Stokes
The damage of the brainstem
The great heights of 15,000 feet or more of
Drugs: opiates such as morphine, oxycodone, or codeine

Risks:

Gender – Men more likely to develop this disease than women.
Heart disorders – such as atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure
Stroke or a brain tumor – reduces the brain's ability to control breathing
Sleep at high altitude
Taking opioid medications

Complications:

Cardiovascular (heart) problems
Cerebrovascular (brain) problems
Daytime fatigue

Evidence of this sleep disorder includes:

Nocturnal polysomnography – monitors heart, lung and brain activity, breathing patterns, arm and leg movements, and oxygen levels in the blood.
oximetry – monitors and records the oxygen level in blood
cardiorespiratory testing – measures air flow patterns breathing.
Testing arterial blood gas (ABG) – measures blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels

Treatment:

Treating other underlying medical problems
Reduction of opioid medications.
Supplemental oxygen
Medications to stimulate breathing, as acetazolamide
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).
Bilevel positive pressure (two levels PAP).
Adaptive Servo ventilation (ASV)

Snoring may or may not appear in the center as sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. If you are always feeling too tired and irritable during the day for no apparent reason, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible. Any type of sleep apnea is a dangerous disorder that requires medical intervention.
